Vet Varsity organizes International School on "One Health"

February 10 Expiring at: May 10

The School of Public Health and Zoonoses, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana is organizing International School on One Health: “A Team Science Approach for Protection of Animal, Human and Animal Interface”. An Integrated View on Infectious Diseases, Food Safety and Zoonoses from 9th to 15th February 2016 in collaboration with University of Saskatchewan, (UofS) Canada. Dr. AS Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, congratulated School of Public Health & Zoonoses, GADVASU for this endeavour.

Dr JPS Gill, Coordinator Research GADVASU  cum  Director School of Public Health  who is organising secretary informed One health school is being held under Integrated Training Program in Infectious Diseases, Food Safety and Public Policy (ITraP) funded by NSERC, Canada. GADVASU and Freie University, (FU) Germany are partners in this program.

Dr Baljit Singh, Associate Dean Research, University of Saskatchewan, (UofS) Canada is  leading a team of eminent scientists from University of Saskatchewan who are facilitating this event. Dr. Baljit laid emphasis on collaborative approach for solving the emerging problems on One Health About twenty five scientists and post graduate students from Canada, Brazil, Germany, Italy and Australia are attending this workshop along with about 100 participants from India. Dr Catherine Soos, Dr Vikram Misra Chair Itrap, John Campbell, Dr. Fabienne Uehlinger’s, David Schneberger from  University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Jane  from Sao Paulo  University, Brazil, Professor Michael Ward, Chair Veterinary Public Health, Dr Navneet Dhand, and Dr Victoria Brookes from The University of Sydney, Australia and Dr Marta Hernandez-Jover, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga will  intract with participants and deliver expert lectures.

Dr SNS Randhawa Director Research GADVASU welcomed the guests and elaborated the international collaborations of GADVASU. Dr. Sandeep Puri, Principal Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana inaugurated one health school. Dr. Puri encouraged the collaborations of both medical and veterinary profession for meeting and tackling emerging challenges in One Health in India. He applauded the role of veterinarians in ‘One Health’ concept with a key role in animal health surveillance and monitoring of endemic or exotic diseases within their territory. He mentioned that the veterinary public health specialists have a pivotal role in the implementation and regulation of food safety standards for the industry. He complimented on the efforts of School of Public Health and Zoonoses, GADVASU, Ludhiana towards One Health by collaborating with various International Universities in Canada, Berlin and Australia as well as collaborations with National agencies like PHFI, PGI and DMC&H, etc.Hecongratulated GADVASU for organizing this One Health School with a Team Science Approach and gave best wishes to the entire team and the participants. Dr. Simrat Sagar Singh Dean PGS, Dr HS  Sandhu  Dean COVS, Dr HKVerma , Director Extension  Dr Asha Dhawan Dean college of Fisheries, Dr AK Puniya  Dean College of Dairy Sciences and other officers and heads of various departments of GADVASU were present at inaugural session.

Dr Gill told that ITraP is an interdisciplinary, international training initiative in infectious diseases, food safety and public policy based at the UofS and is a part of the global One Health initiative which aims to create collaborations between experts from health and environmental disciplines for better health care for humans, animals, and environment.  Schools under this program were earlier successfully held in Berlin (2013), Saskatchewan (2014, 2015) and GADVASU (2014). Experts from   ICAR, IVRI, ICMR, WHO, and PHFI will be sharing their expertise during this One Health School. The scientific program will include keynote addresses, hands on training session on zoonosis diagnostics, environmental pollutants analysis and handling of lab animals. The participants will be given online lectures and case discussions with experts in Canada also through WebEx.

Dr Gill informed that one other International workshop on Disease prioritization and risk analysis  in collaboration with Sydney is also running paralleling in School of Public Health and Zoonoses. These events are expected to provide platform to scientists from different disciplines with the objectives of One Health, Food safety, Environmental pollutants, Zoonoses and disease prioritization by sharing their experiences
