Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana was established on 21st April, 2006 through Punjab Act no. 16 of 2005. The primary focus of the university is to serve the society by promoting livestock production and health through integrated teaching, research and extension.
The university has attributed one constituent college and one private affiliated college to impart Diploma in Veterinary Science and Animal Health Technology:
Veterinary Polytechnic College, Kaljharani: Veterinary Polytechnic at Kaljharani, District Bathinda was established in the year 2010 as a constituent college of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana to impart education leading to Diploma in Veterinary Science and Animal Health Technology to support the veterinary services through trained para-veterinary staff. The institute has its own well developed Sahiwal cattle farm of 250 cows and a Beetle Goat farm of 50 goats with a view to impart practical training to the students. The institute also has a well-furnished hostel with all the latest facilities like gym, playground, room etc. The Diploma in Veterinary Science and Animal Health Technology has been designed to train human resource in developing para-veterinary personnels. The trainees after completing the Diploma course shall be able to co-ordinate and work under the supervision of Registered Veterinary Practitioners to provide better health care to domesticated animals in Veterinary Hospitals, Veterinary Colleges, Research and Training Institutes, Cooperative Sector and Non- Government Organizations etc. Majority of the students after successful completion of their studies have been appointed in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Cooperative Sector, GADVASU and some Non- Government organizations.
The training provided to the Diploma holder of Veterinary Science and Animal Health Technology to support and complement Veterinary practioners, Public Health Officials and Bio-medical Research Scientists, in handling of domestic animals.
To serve the society by providing adequate trained supporting manpower capable of handling livestock health and production.
To provide diploma in Veterinary Science and Animal Health Technology to the residents of Punjab in order to cater the demands of Veterinary Pharmacists required by Animal Husbandry Department for providing First Aid to the ailing Animals.
To provide basic consultancy services to livestock owners, Government/Semi Government and allied agencies.
