Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a five day ‘On-Campus’ “Integrated Goat Farming and Organic Fodder Production vocational training program” at Booh, Patti, Tarn Taran from 10th to 14th August 2015. The integrated training programme exhibited an enormous response from large number of farmers of the district Tarn Taran. Out of 55 applications received for the training 40 farmers were selected for the training on first come first serve basis and the farmers who could not be accommodated this time were assured for incorporation in the subsequent training to be conducted at KVK next time (tentatively in September, 2015) on priority basis.
The training was organized under the KVK scheme being run in the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Worthy Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University approved the allocation of funds for the training programme for the farmers of Tarn Taran under the project of KVK Scheme, ICAR-14. Under The Scheme a comprehensive Goat Farming and Organic Fodder Production vocational training program based on scientific knowledge of the University Scientists and experts, on various aspects of goat farming was formulated for self entrepreneurship leading to the rural upliftment.
Speaking on the inaugural session of the training programme, Dr Prahlad Singh, Associate Director (Training) Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Ludhiana, stressed upon the development of self entrepreneurship of the underprivileged categories in the rural population of the Punjab. The course was supported by the lectures from experts from the university and practical training through exposure visit to the University Goat Farm at Ludhiana. Dr Prahlad Singh stressed that the agricultural diversification in Punjab directly points towards the development of Animal husbandry in the state. Such type of trainings help farmers, farm women, and rural youth in developing the agricultural entrepreneurship through diversification and management of the agricultural practices in the fodder crops on scientific lines and lead to optimum agricultural produce and overall economic development. The management of degrading atural resources which are adversely affecting production capacity of the ecosystem can be prevented to some extent through organic farming and can be considered as an effective initiative. There is an urgent need to shift towards the organic farming practices in order to improve the food quality produced from such enterprises so that the incidence of disease and soil fertility improvement can be targeted through the adoption of new tools of science and technology which offer a tremendous opportunity for application in agriculture.
The trainees were also addressed by Sh Devender Singh Sandhu, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Patti, Tarn Taran who appreciated the efforts of the KVK for organizing such programmes and gave his word of advice to the trainees regarding agricultural diversification besides harnessing youth towards the productive work so that the youth can be saved from the wrath of drugs prevailing in the border areas.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Shashipaul, Assistant Professor LPM, KVK Booh, highlighted various science and technology interventions developed by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and other National Agricultural Source Institutes working in the Nation for dissemination of information in agriculture, agro forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, home science and allied sciences through trainings , front line demonstrations and On farm Testing of technologies developed by the backstopping agencies under the KVK mandate. Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor Soils, stressed upon the practice of
agricultural diversification through livestock production as an effective economical tool for the medium and small farmers and the role of organic farming in quality food production through development of various organic inputs for Livestock development. The chief guest at Valedictory function, Sh Rajbir Singh , Sarpanch Village Booh distributed the certificates among the trainees and appreciated the KVK activities being conducted in addition to trainings in Agriculture and alliedfields.
Course coordinators, Dr Shashipal, Sh Navjot Singh and Dr Anil Kumar worked very hard to make the vocation training programme successful.Sh Navjot Singh proposed the vote of thanks at valedictory function and thanked the trainees and visiting guest faculty for the efforts made to make this On-Campus training programme a success and for economic and social development of the farmers of Tarn Taran district.
