Pre-Kharif 2015, Kisan Samelan organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tarn Taran

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a one day Pre-Kharif 2015 ‘Kisan Samelan’ at Harike, Patti, Tarn Taran on 16 July 2015. Kisan Samelan saw an enormous response from a huge gathering of farmers of the district Tarn Taran.Kisan Samelan was inaugurated by Dr HK Verma, Director of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Two pamphlets on “hare chare daa achaar baraonna” and “Mittee dee sehat sambaal” were released by Dr HK Verma, on this occasion. Vermicompost produced at the KVK was also launched and displayed on this occasion.

Speaking on the inaugural session Dr. Prahlad Singh, Associate Director (Training) said that the Kisan Samelan will help farmers, farm women, and rural youth in managing the agricultural practices in the Kharif crops on scientific lines and lead to optimum agricultural produce and farmers’ overall economic development. Further he said that agriculture supports 58% of the population and per caput availability of resources is about 4 to 6 times less as compared to world average which due to increasing demographic pressure and consequent diversion of the land for non-agricultural uses is further decreasing. Due to the high cropping intensity of 136% there is an unprecedented degradation of land and groundwater resource, and also fall in the rate of growth of total factor productivity. In order to meet growing demands of the population efficiency-mediated improvement in productivity is the most viable option to raise production. Natural resource base of agriculture is shrinking and degrading, and is adversely affecting production capacity of the ecosystem. There is an urgent need to adopt new tools of science and technology which offer a tremendous opportunity for application in agriculture.

Speaking on the occasion Dr HK Verma, highlighted various science and technology interventions developed by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and other National Agricultural  Source Institutes working in the Nation for dissemination of information in agriculture, agroforestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, home science and allied sciences through trainings , front line demonstrations and On farm Testing of technologies developed by the backstopping agencies under the KVK mandate. He also stressed upon the problems relating to broader areas of rural development concerning agriculture, including postharvest technology by developing co-operative programmes with other organizations. Dr Verma appreciated the efforts of the KVK, Tarn Taran, who have started working in a convergence mood with aligned departments in the district for the economic and social development of the farmers of the district.

A team of experts comprising Dr MP Gupta, Professor Veterinary Medicine, GADVASU, Ludhiana; Dr Amritpaul Singh Brar, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Moga; Dr Udeybir Singh, Associate Professor, GADVASU; Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, Fisheries, GADVASU, Ludhiana; Dr Laxman Singh, Horticulture Development Officer, Patti, Tarn Taran; Inspector Malkit Singh, PDDB, Tarn Taran; addressed the farmers through deliberations on various aspects of Pre-Kharif:- Agriculture practices,Livestock practices, Horticulture production and Fisheries production.  Facts about diversification in agriculture and its impact on environmental conservation were also conveyed to the farmers. The farmers were advised to think upon the lines of value addition of agricultural produce so that the economic returns are more from agriculture and livestock sector for self sustenance.

A self help group associated with the KVK (Guru Nanak Self Help Group, Booh, Havelian) demonstrated and displayed various items and products of agriculture produce for the household and other use. The highlights of the display were various squashes, jams, pickles and other agricultural products.

An exhibition showing the activities of the KVK and the recommended practices for the farmers on various aspects of Agriculture and Livestock production was exhibited in the Kisan Samelan. Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana displayed the Literature and Publications of the University for the benefit and information to the farmers. Department of Agriculture and ATMA of District Tarn Taran participated in the Kisan Samelan by their exhibits and literature for the farmers.

The Kisan Samelan was attended by the SGPC member S. Inderjit Singh Karmuwala; Sarpanch Mundapind, S. Paramjit Singh; Sarpanch, Booh, S. Rajbir Singh, S. Gurbachan Singh a progressive farmer practicing value addition and organic farming; S. Gurvinder Singh, a progressive pear producing farmer; S Gurmukh Singh, a progressive dairy farmer of the district. Various Government and Private sector organizations participated in the Kisan Samelan with their farmer friendly products. Among them were MSD India Ltd, Zoetis India Ltd, Virbach India Ltd, Pioneer Seeds, Cargil Feed, JohnDeer Tractors, BS Gill Tractors, Pashu Sirjan Ltd.

Dr Prahlad Singh welcomed the gathering of 473 farmers for attending and showing their interest towards the Kisan Samelan for pre-Kharif 2015 practices on scientific lines in agriculture and allied fields. Dr Singh proposed a vote of thanks at the occasion. He also appreciated the coordination and effort of the faculty of the KVK, Dr Shashipaul, Dr Anil Kumar and Dr Navjot Singh and the non teaching staff for making the Kisan Samelan a success.
