NSS Cell of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University observed World Earth Day-2015 in collaboration with Society for Conservation of Flora and Fauna under the theme “My Earth My Duty”. More than 115 NSS volunteers of College of Fisheries and College of Dairy Science & Technology participated in celebration and irrigated nearly 6000 plants. They planted 100 saplings by adopting slogan “Clean Ludhiana, Green Ludhiana” on the occasion of World Earth Day-2015. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan, NSS Programme Coordinator said that volunteers took pledge to protect and nurture the existing plant in the adopted school/college/university campus, including parks, lawns, hedges, roadside. He stressed for adopting sapling plantation on the day and to visit planted sapling sites twice in a week and nurture at least ten plants into a strong plant. Quarterly task has been assigned to NSS volunteers for nurturing 50 plants/trees during the study period.
Dr Hassan told to be a green warrior by adopting many fruitful activities. He elaborated during interactive talk on the topic “Role of Plant and Water in Earth Beautification” and emphasized on forestation, reforestation, pristine quality of water, disadvantages of deforestation and the importance of ornamental, flowering, fruiting, medicinal plants. Dr S. S. Hassan also pointed that one tree can sequester anywhere between 3 to 10 kg of CO2 every year, so plant and nurture at least 50 trees because it reduces annual CO2 emissions by 183-500 kg every year for 100 years for protecting and conserving the natural resources. He motivated to plant on personal occasion like birthday, father, mother`s birthday, marriage anniversary day, and holidays such as Sunday, Republic day, Independence day as well as during Van Mahotsav Week because trees are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.
