More than 100 NSS volunteers/students of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana of two colleges viz. College of Fisheries (COF), College of Dairy Science and Technology (CODST), staffs, faculty members and NSS officers attended “Eye Donation Campaign” and two guest lectures on “Eye Diseases, Care and Management”. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan, NSS Programme Coordinator, said that campaign was started with the basics of eyes, its importance in human life and ophthalmic diseases. The guest lecture was delivered by Dr Anamika Ahuja, Unit Head Vision Sankara, Ludhiana (a unit of Sankara Eye Foundation) on the topic “Vision care and facilities at Sankara Eye Hospital”, Ludhiana. Dr Satya Karna, Medical Senior Ophthalmologist delivered talk on “Eye Diseases, Care and Management”. He briefly furnished about different types of common eye diseases and basic causes of eye disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia, conjunctivitis, cataract, eye floaters, corneal abrasion, eye redness, dry eyes, visual disturbances, eye pain, eye burning, watery eyes, glaucoma, cone-rod dystrophy, usher syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, eye and vision development, age related macular degeneration occurring in the people. He showed video clippings on LASIK, cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion. Dr Satya also told about the tips to prevent eyes from the aberration/diseases, such as enough water drinking, healthy eating having antioxidants, fruit, vegetables, almonds, green tea, broccoli, black grapes. He invited all students/volunteers for free eye checkup in the Sankara hospital, Ludhiana. Dr Hassan informed that all NSS volunteers took eye donation pledge to provide vision to one million Indians suffering from corneal blindness. As per the current scenario, approximately 1.22 lakhs peoples are affected by bilateral corneal blindness. Ms Prabhjot Kaur, HRD consultant of Sankara hospital distributed brochures, pamphlets to students/volunteers. Dr Siva Kumar of CODST was also present on the occasion and extended vote of thanks.
