International conference concludes at Vet Varsity

International school on One Health which was jointly organised by School of Public Health and Zoonoses, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana and University of Saskatchewan, Canada has concluded. Dr. J. P. S. Gill, Organizing Secretary and Director, School of Public Health and Zoonoses said that on last day discussions were focussed around One Health initiative, policies in Indian context, importance of inter-sectoral collaboration, partnership at national and state levels. Experts delivered lectures on Food Safety standards issues at national and international levels, role of wildlife in emergence of diseases, emergence of rickettsial diseases in northern India. Dr BaljIt Singh Assocoate Dean Research University of Saskatchewan motivated participants by his lecture on developing leadership qualities giving emphasis on team work in research activities. Drs Vikram Misra, Hugh Townsend and Emily Jenkins from University of Saskatchewan acted as moderators in a case study discussion with participants on zoonotic disease for epidemiology, team building, diagnostics, control and eradication.

Dr. V. K. Taneja, Vice-chancellor, GADVASU, in his address at the valedictory function said that this event was successful in disseminating message of One Health and Interdisciplinary approach for tackling emerging health issues and emphasized that the recommendations that have come out of this event need to be implemented with the involvement of all the stake holders. There is need for continuously monitoring through surveillance for spatial and temporal data base of pesticide, heavy metal and antibiotic residues and pathogens to develop mitigation strategies. He also commended the efforts of University of Saskatchwan and School of Public Health and Zoonoses, for organizing this international event and deliberations on important issues staring at us.
 
Dr. Gill, shared the recommendations that have emerged out of this event. He said there is need for developing multidisciplinary collaborations between institutes and countries to address problems of human and animal health issues such as emerging zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, and environmental pollutants by joint efforts of human health, animal health and environmental specialists. Antibiotic resistance is a global problem and is not limited to humans alone. It is also a serious problem in livestock which in turn puts human health at risk. Therefore there is need for collaborative approach to tackle this problem by involving animal health specialists in antibiotic resistance network projects funded by Indian Council of Medical Research. The policy makers should be involved in in the collaborative approach for major animal and human health issues to give strength to the movement directed towards tackling these problems. There is need for evaluation of economic burden of diseases to stake claim for funds to control such diseases and to support any policy formulations.

Dr VK Taneja, Dr SNS Randhawa Director Research, Dr PD Juyal, Dr HS Sandhu Dean, Dr Baljit Singh and Dr Vikram Misra presented awards to participants for best oral presentation, best poster presentation, drawing competition on One Health issues and pamphlet preparation for community awareness. Dr Yadu B and Dr Rajnish from University of Saskatchewan won Oral presentation awards. Team of researchers led by Dr Jaspreet , Dr Kirandeep, Dr Anupma won best poster awards.
