The 21 day training program on “Advances in Diagnosis, Therapy and Prevention of Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases of Livestock” was organized by Department of Veterinary Medicine of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana under the auspices of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi from 8.10.2013 to 28.10.2013.
The training programme was inaugurated by Dr SNS Randhawa, Dean PGS cum Director Research and Dean, COVS. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Randhawa emphasized the need of this kind of training in the face of changing epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases of livestock globally. Dr. Sandhu also endorsed this with a view that these diseases pose a serious threat to the livestock. Dr B.K Bansal, Course Director and Head of Veterinary Medicine department conveyed that twenty five participants from 15 states of India participated in this training programme and expressed his sincere thanks to Dr. V.K. Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU for his patronship and ICAR for providing such opportunity to organize this training. A total of 39 lectures covering various aspects of livestock health were delivered by the experts from the host institute. Hands on training were provided to the participants on the latest techniques of diagnosis viz; ECG, endoscopy, echocardiography and management of digestive and mineral disorders, mastitis, lameness in farm animals. Besides, experts from different veterinary colleges of the country were also invited to deliver expert lectures and provide hands on training to the participants. Dr. S Prathaban from TANVASU delivered his expert lecture on use of ultrasonography and echocardiography in animal practice, Dr. Rajeev Singh from SKUAST, Jammu on important emerging and re-emerging diseases of sheep and goat, Dr. U Dimri, principal scientist from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar on advances in alternative medicine in Veterinary Practice and Dr. D R Wadhwa from Palampur on parturient paresis. During this training program, participants also got an opportunity to view various activities of herbal drug manufacturing at Dabur Ayurvet Limited, Baddi unit. Having seen the availability of modern diagnostic facilities and large number of dairy animals presented at clinics, participants recommended that the department should start post graduate diplomas in large animal medicine, and further the department should be escalated as Advanced Centre for Large Animal Medicine.
