Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary Science, GADVASU, Ludhiana has been awarded Bernstein Travel Fellowship 2012 by the International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA) for attending and presenting two research papers at the 16th IVRA meeting and European Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Annual Meeting 2012 which was held recently in Bursa, Turkey from 26-31 August, 2012. IVRA is an official organ of American College of Veterinary Radiologists.
The Bernstein Travel Fellowship was established in 1988 and is named in the honour of Dr. Micheal Bernstein, an honorary member and former President of the IVRA. The fellowship is aimed to assist Veterinary Radiologists in attending and presenting a research paper at a scientific meeting of the association which is held once in three years.
Dr. Kumar delivered an oral presentation entitled “Radiography and ultrasonography as screening tools in the detection of lung and liver cysts in bovine” by A Kumar, NS Saini, J Mohindroo, BB Singh, V Sangwan and NK Sood. Ultrasonography was recommended as a screening tool to detect lung and liver cysts caused by a dog parasite (Echinococcus). Infected dogs may cause contamination of fodder with parasite eggs. Ingestion of eggs-contaminated fodder by cows and buffaloes forms cysts in the lung and liver. This disease also spreads from animal to man (zoonotic disease). Hence regular deworming of dogs is must to prevent spreading of infection to ruminants and man. This disease is prevalent worldwide including India and at GADVASU hospital the number of sick animals is increasing. The sick animals show anorexia, respiratory discomfort, tympani etc. The research paper was highly appreciated by the International scientific community at the meeting.
He also presented a poster on “Ultrasonographic evaluation of massive abdominal swellings in cows and buffaloes” authored by A Kumar, J Mohindroo, V Sangwan, SK Mahajan, K Singh, A Anand and NS Saini. Dr. NS Saini, Professor-cum-Head, Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology congratulated Dr. Kumar and team for receiving this fellowship and informed that this department has got this fellowship second time.
This meeting was attended by about 300 delegates from 35 countries. Presentations by the Key note speakers and scientists were very informative. Recent advances in the diagnostic imaging modalities like MRI, CT, scintigraphy, angiography, echocardiography, interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures were discussed. During this meeting Dr. Kumar also participated in a Continuing Education Seminar on “Advanced ultrasonography”. Dr. Kumar enrolled as member of the IVRA for 2012-15. Previously he is recipient of Five Best papers and Three Appreciation award certificates for his research. He was also awarded World Buiatrics Association Scholarship 2010 for attending 26th World Buiatrics Congress.
