A hands-on training program on ‘Value Addition of Milk’ for the dairy farmers is being organized at College of Dairy Science & Technology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University, Ludhiana. Total 27 farmers ( Female:12 ; Male:15 ) from various parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh viz. Bathinda, Firozpur, Phagwara, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ropar, Anandpur Sahib and Nalagarh have registered for this training. Inaugurating the training programme, Dr. H. K. Verma, Director Extension Education explained the importance of Value Addition of milk in augmenting the farmer’s income and sustainability. He also explained the various other extension activities of the university where dairy farmers can get associated with and take benefits. He said that through such training farmers can develop basic skills necessary to process milk into various value added products. Through this training, farmers are also encouraged to become a dairy entrepreneur for generating more profit apart from selling only liquid milk. Training coordinators Dr. Gopika Talwar, Dr. Veena Nagraj and Mr. Amit K Barui informed that during these five days farmers will gain hands-on-experience about milk processing for the value addition of milk into various products viz. paneer, flavoured whey drinks, sterilized flavoured dairy drink, dahi, misti dahi, milk cake, lassi and mozzarella cheese. Farmers will be also be sensitized about the various on farm and off farm quality assurance measures and safety issues regarding value added milk products. The farmers will also be briefed about the book keeping and marketing strategies of dairy products. Such training programs are regularly organized every three months to help farmers understand the essential skills required for milk processing. College of Dairy Science and Technology, Ludhiana also organizes training programs for individual farmers about milk products of their interest as and when request received.
