Dairy Sector has great potential in processing and allied activities

 Dr. Anil Kumar Puniya, Dean, College of Dairy Science and Technology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana said thatPunjab state, contributing about 7% of national milk production with only 2.5% of the country’s dairy milch animals, stands at 6th place in milk production in the country. Currently, only about 15% of milk is being processed in the organized sector. He was discussing the vital points and processing potential of dairy sector in the state. The consumption of milk and milk products is expected to grow at a higher pace compared to production. There is enough potential for the growth of dairy processing sector in the state. Therefore, looking at the potential and demand of the dairy sector, the College of Dairy Science and Technology was established in 2008 to produce high quality human resource for nearly 79 milk plants in cooperative and private sector in the state, to develop new technologies, to conduct trainings for farmers, entrepreneurs and industry and to liaise with other dairy development organizations.

He revealed that the college offers B.Tech. (Dairy Technology);  M.Tech. (Dairy Technology); M.Tech. (Dairy Engineering); M.Tech. (Dairy Microbiology) and M.Sc. (Dairy Economics) and have highly qualified faculty, furnished lecture halls and well-equipped labs. A state of the art experimental dairy plant is also established in the college for imparting hands on training to the students. The university conducts a common entrance test annually for admission to undergraduate programmes. Dr. Puniya, said that college is growing at a rapid pace in teaching, research and extension activities. State of the art dairy processing facilities are being developed and well trained dairy professionals are produced by the college.
