Monthly meeting of Innovative Fish Farmers Association (IFFA) of Punjab was held at College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, in which progressive fish farmers from different districts of the State discussed various issues and culture related queries with the scientists of the University. With the onset of summer season, preparation of fish ponds for stocking new seed are underway and in this context farmers were apprised about the scientific pre-stocking management practices for higher productivity by Dr. Prabjeet Singh, Assistant Professor and Dr. Sachin O Khairnar, Assistant Scientist, College of Fisheries. Dr. Sachin apprised the farmers about the need and importance of supplementary feeding in nursery and rearing ponds. Dr. Prabjeet emphasized that complete drying of ponds after every 4-5 years should be done to remove accumulated dead organic matter at the pond bottom which is vital for sustainable pond productivity. Queries of the farmers related to natural food production were also addressed in the meeting. Besides this, farmers were also apprised about the scope of vannamei farming in salt affected areas of South-West Punjab.
Dr. Asha Dhawan, Dean, College of Fisheries stressed that such type of scientific meetings are required to enable farmers to share their experiences and problems with the scientists to record feedbacks for conducting need based region specific research for strengthening the existing technological support to the farmers of the State.
