Veterinary Varsity organizes National Model Training Course on Value Addition and Entrepreneurship Development

A national model training course on “Value addition of livestock products and Entrepreneurship development” sponsored by Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India from January 16-23, starts at Department of Livestock Products Technology,  Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana (GADVASU). This training programme is being attended by various field functionaries/ field veterinarians/extension workers from different organisation such Punjab Animal Husbandry department, Uttarakhand  Department of Animal Husbandry, State Agricultural Universities like Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST) Jammu, Nanaji Deshmukh University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, PAU & GADVASU KVKs.  Dr Manish Kumar Chatli, Head and Course Director informed that the course schedule include lecture-cum-practical demonstrations on processing, value addition, packaging, quality assurance programme and field visits to dairy and meat processing units. The trainees will also be provided hands on training on pesticides residue detection from livestock products and microbiological quality evaluation techniques. He revealed that the officials from the financial institutions will provide information on development of detailed project report, different schemes and other essential requirements for budgeting a project. Dr. Cahtli told that the Department of Livestock Products Technology has a ‘state of the art’ facilities of meat and egg processing, quality assurance and packaging technologies.

The training was inaugurated by Dr J.P.S. Gill, Director Research, GADVASU and he released the compendium containing all the lectures of the training programme. Dr Gill highlighted the importance of value addition and quality assurance programme to provide wholesome, nutritive and quality food to the consumers. Dr. A.S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor appreciated the efforts of department of LPT and anticipated that the course will go a long way to address the challenges in livestock farming, value addition and entrepreneurship development. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director of Extension Education, apprised that this department is carrying out practical research related with livestock products which is exemplified by the transfer of more than 15 technologies to the industries for commercial exploitation. The training course is basically a trainer’s trainee programme and the extension workers/field functionaries will propagate the value addition technologies to their end users and will help in improving their profitability and livelihood. Dr Chatli stressed that Prime Minister’s appeal for doubling the income of farmer by 2022 will be possible with the adoption of innovative approach of value addition by the farmers, which will help to save their processing, transportation, handling and storage losses to generate more revenues.  Dr. P.S. Brar, Dean, College of Veterinary Science congratulated the organizing committee for holding training course in the institute.
