Vet Varsity trained fish farmer enters into value addition entrepreneurship

College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, has developed zero wastage fish processing technology for developing value added products  from spine less fish meat and valuable from processing waste, which not only helps the farmers to increase shelf life/availability of fish products, but also adds over 30% more profit into their pockets, besides addressing environmental issues with respect to disposal of processing waste.  The information was shared by Dr Asha Dhawan, Dean of the college. She said that regular skill development training programs are also organized by department of Harvest and Post-Harvest Technology of College of Fisheries (GADVASU), to promote small scale fish processing entrepreneurship among the fish farmers.

Mr. Jasvir Singh Aujla, a progressive fish farmer from Village Karodian, Tehsil Payal –District Ludhiana), trained in fish processing by College of Fisheries, entered into fish processing entrepreneurship. With a vast fish farming experience of 17 years, Mr. Jasvir Singh is producing fish with an average productivity of 7 t/ha/yr, which is higher than the average productivity of the State (5.27 t/ha/yr). Now he has entered into fish processing to cater the ever increasing demand of ready to eat or ready to cook value added products in the modern world.  Understanding the importance and need of producing value added health products and hygienic marketing for earning higher economic returns.

Mr. Jasvir Singh displayed his value added fish products (fish balls, fish cutlets, fish nuggets, fish sausages and fish pickle during the GADVASU Pashu Palan Mela and recently held State level Fish Festival in the university campus. All the products were well received and relished by fish lovers.  Since then there is no looking back for Jasvir Singh. He is getting continuous queries from health conscious consumers regarding availability of fish products. Presently, Mr. Jasvir Singh is selling his value added fish products under the trade name “Karodian’s Fresh Food, with future plans to enter into the supermarkets for popularizing his convenient value added fish products among the consumers.

For his incredible contribution in the field of fish farming and fish processing, Jasvir Singh was also conferred with GADVASU Chief Minister Progressive Fish Farmer’s Award during 2016. He is an inspirational personality, whom every enthusiastic farmer would like to follow for reaping rich harvests through innovations, with special reference to depleting resources and increasing demand to preserve every gram of food produced through processing.

Dr. Dhawan said that skill development is a two way mutual program, where the beneficiary needs to replicate the acquired skills into an entrepreneurship and Jasvir Singh has done the same and opened a new window for fish farmers of the State, which will certainly take the aquaculture sector to further heights.
