Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a six day training programme for the dairy farmers of Punjab from 25th March 2016 to 30th March 2016. The information was shared by Dr. Prahlad Singh, Associate Director, coordinator of the training. He said that the programme was sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research under “Unnat Bharat Abhiyan”. Thirty farmers from all over Punjab participated in this comprehensive informative training programme developed by the directorate. The programme was marked by lectures from different guest faculty envisaging the topics related to housing, nutrition, health, reproduction and value addition of dairy farming. On the management aspect issues related to modern housing, scientific management practices were discussed. Lectures on health management of dairy animals were related to udder health and clean milk production, zoonosis, biosceurity of dairy farm and prevention of various diseases. On the value addition front aspects of milk and milk product formation were the main issues. The farmers were taken around the University Dairy Farm to have the practical exposure on various practices involved in efficient outcome of the dairy farming. First time the training was marked by a lecture on media as a tool for marketing livestock and their produce. Dr HK Verma, Course Director, in his inaugural address stressed upon the practice of Scientific Dairy Farming based on the research and technologies developed at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana as well as other research institutes. He revealed that the reproduction is the basis of better and more production from the livestock. It was deliberated in detail to understand the procedure to meet the target of one calf per animal in a year. He also stressed upon the use of literature and monthly magazine for farmers’ self updation and economic dairy practices. Dr Jaswinder Singh, second coordinator of the training said that the trainee farmers were facilitated with participation certificate and useful literature at valedictory function.
