Dr. S K Sharma HoD said that the science of traditional knowledge about medicinal plants, is gaining importance in the present scenario at a fast pace and the use of herbal medicines in disease cure is becoming important component of ethnoveterinary medicine. The use of herbal medicines in disease cure will not only help in controlling menace of residues of synthetic drugs and pesticides in animal products, but will also enhance income return for the farmers by cultivating plants with medicinal values. These crops may serve as a viable alternative to promote diversification from the current paddy-wheat crop rotation and minimize use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Indian industry is also likely to gain by manufacturing and selling herbal based drugs and products by establishing eco-friendly agro-based industries. Use of herbal preparations in organic livestock production will ensure safety and health of consumers, and protection of environment. To fulfill these objectives, GADVASU has undertaken detailed research investigations in ethnopharmacology on several commonly cultivated and wild plants of Punjab.
