FAO Scientist visits Vet. University

August 19 Expiring at: May 10

Dr H.P.S. Makkar, Animal Production Officer, Food and Agriculture organization (FAO), Rome visited Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. Before joining FAO, Dr Makkar was Technical Officer at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

While explaining about his visit Dr Manju Wadhwa, Head Department of Animal Nutrition told that Dr Makkar oversees capacity building in the field of research in animal nutrition in large parts of the world. While scientists and students around the world imbibe the knowledge from his books, the faculty and students at GAVASU had the privilege of receiving Dr Makkar’s knowledge, ideas and insights in very specialised areas like in vitro gas production technique, quantification of tannins and anti-nutritional factors, quantification of phorbol esters, efficiency of microbial protein synthesis in rumen and sustainable animal production. He addressed the faculty and students and enlightened the audience on the aspect “Global developments in livestock sector and challenges and opportunities to further food and nutrition security”. He also talked about the difference in food and nutritional security and role of livestock in achieving nutritional security. Dr Makkar thanked Dr A S Nanda, Vice-Chancellor for inviting him at GADVASU.

Dr Makkar had a meeting with the core group of scientists of GADVASU in the Department of Animal Nutrition and discussed about the economic losses in livestock production system. He appreciated the work done by GADVASU on economic losses due to various diseases, parasitic infestation, mycotoxins and nutritional deficiency diseases etc.

He visited University Dairy farm, College of fisheries, College of Dairy Science and Technology, departments of Livestock Products and Technology. He extended his hand in bridging the gaps between our scientists and those working in different parts of the world and at the FAO Head Quarters at Rome. He appreciated the work done by various scientists, but was of the opinion that the quantity and quality of work produced by GADVASU scientists should be communicated to the outside world.

Dr Wadhwa, thanked Dr Makkar for enlightening the faculty and students with his worldwide experience.
