Five days training programme on ‘Fish Farming’ was organized by College of Fisheries at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Sixteen farmers and entrepreneurs, including 3 women, from different district of state attended the training. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Sr. scientist and the Course – coordinator, told that technical knowhow regarding complete package of practice for managing a fish pond scientifically for handsome economic returns was provided to the trainees. Different aspects related to fish farming including selection of site, layout and construction of pond, preparation of pond, stocking of pond with special reference to seed quality, species selection, stocking size, stocking density, stocking ratio, water quality management, feed formulation, feeding strategies, fish health management, integrated fish farming, processing of fish for value addition, marketing strategies and record keeping for economic evaluation were discussed.
The course schedule of the training included separate theory and practical sessions, which were technically, coordinated by Abhishek Srivastava & Dr. Prabjeet Singh, Assistant Professors (Fisheries), respectively. Special lectures were delivered by Mrs. Satinder Kaur, Senior Fisheries Officer from Fish Farmers Development Agency (FFDA), Ludhiana to make the participants aware of various promotional schemes provided by the State Government for promoting fish farming in the State. Harpreet Singh, Editor cum Public Relation Officer (PRO), GADVASU imparted comprehensive knowledge and importance of mass media for developing an effective marketing channel for fish and fish products for higher economic returns. Dr. Jaspal Singh Hundal, Assistant professor, Department of Veterinary and
Animal Husbandry Extension, briefed the trainees about the various livestock training programmes being conducted at GADVASU and other utility services/facilities provided to the farmers by the university.
Dr Asha Dhawan, Dean College of Fisheries, GADVASU, advised the farmers to remain in touch with the experts to update their technical knowledge and consultancy, so that they are able to address different issues related to fish farming in a more scientific manner for higher productivity and profitability. All the participants were highly satisfied about the training programme, with special reference to hands on training, which was of great help to make them understand the things more easily. A network of participants with fish farmers and experts from GADVASU was proposed to be constituted for updates and queries, which will be initiated soon.
