A five day training program on pig farming was organized by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Dr. Harish Kumar Verma, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU informed that a lot of enthusiasm has been noticed among the trainees. More than 100 farmers registered for the training and training was imparted to 70 among them on the first come first serve basis. Dr. Verma said that after getting such training from the university, the unemployed youth can start their own enterprise, which on one hand can provide the needed employment and on the other hand bring diversification in agriculture. The farmers were instructed to construct cheap but comfortable sheds for their pigs which help them in better hygienic conditions and excellent management. Major part of the expenditure in pig farming is on feeding. The farmers were guided to make economical feed. The farmers were trained to differentiate between healthy and sick animals. Role of regular vaccination, deworming and hygiene in prevention of diseases was stressed. The first aid methods
for various ailments were taught and practical demonstrations were held. Tips for timely detection of heat and care of pregnant and new born animals were emphasized. Dr. J.S. Bhati, Head of the department advised the trainees about the changing trends in the livestock farming. He informed farmers about the rising demand of pork in day to day urban life. Dr. Navdeep Singh, technical coordinator informed that keeping the interest and demand of training by the farmers, directorate has planned to conduct a one more training on pig farming from 3rd August. Dr. Simrinder Singh Sodhi, course coordinator of the training informed that in the trainees group there were 69 male and one female farmer. Dr. Sodhi also informed that trainees were acquainted with the housing and managemental practices of the pig farming. A great emphasis has been laid on the pig nutrition to have faster growth rate.
