College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University organizes regular on-campus as well as off-campus meeting of Innovative Fish Farmers Association IFFA every month, to address the queries and problems of the farmers. During these meetings the technological expertise of farmers is upgraded through expert lectures on upcoming innovation and recently developed technologies in aquaculture, which is corroborated time to time through hands-on-training and demonstrations on various aquaculture aspects, suggested by the farmers themselves. Meeting of the month of January, 2015 was held at Village ‘Mud Khera’ of district Patiala with an aim to educate the farmers about the recent technologies and management practices for sustainable higher productivity and hence, profitability from aquaculture practices.

Over 15 progressive fish farmers attended the meeting. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Scientist (Fisheries) and Dr. Prabjeet Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) from College of Fisheries (GADVASU) addressed the queries of the farmers regarding liming, manuring, plankton production, feeding and health management of fish, with special reference to winter care.

The farmers were also made aware of the recent success achieved by GADVASU in Pangas catfish and brackishwater ‘Vannamei’ shrimp farming in Punjab for the first time. All the farmers showed keen interest in fish processing for developing value added products. In view of farmer’s interest, College of Fisheries will be organizing a 5 day training programme in fish processing in the month of February, 2015 for providing practical expertise to the farmers for developing value added production from carp fish for higher profitability

Dr. Kesar Singh Kheri, Assistant Director Fisheries, Patiala also attended the meeting and appraised the farmers to stay in regular touch with GADVASU for acquiring technological skills and expert guidance to maintain their ponds more scientifically for higher productivity and profit.
