Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) on “Hygienic processing and Value Addition of Meat and Meat products for Employment Generation and Women Empowerment” is being organised by Department of Livestock Products Technology (LPT), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, Punjab. The programme was inaugurated by Dr S.N.S. Randhawa, Director Research, GADVASU. Dr Manish Kumar Chatli, Head, LPT and Course Director detailed that this training programme is scheduled from 29th Dec. 2014 to 24th Jan 2015 and sponsored by Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI. There was an overwhelming response to the training programme. A total of 43 applications were received, out of which 30 candidates were selected. The participants were from six different districts of Punjab and other states including UP and Bihar. There is due representation to all categories, four female candidates, five candidates from SC category have already enrolled. Ten participants are already involved in livestock farming and processing and keen to start ventures in a scientific manner. Dr Randhawa ushered the participants that food processing industries is a ‘Sun Rise Industry’ and lot of government schemes are available and the participants
should take the benefit of them. He stressed on the fact that the processing is a necessity to make quality food availability to the masses. Dr Chatli said that this programme is a comprehensive course on the processing, preservation, value addition, packaging and marketing of the meat and meat products and approximately sixty lectures will be delivered out of which 20 classes are dedicated exclusively to hands-on-training for the preparation and packaging techniques for different value added meat products such as meat kababs, meat samosa, meat balls/koftas, meat patties, sausages, pickle, meat cutlets etc. Apart from this the experts/faculty members from Animal Nutrition, Public Health, Engineering, Management, Industry, Banks/ financial institution, Food technology will impart training to the participants. To give the practical overview, visits of the trainees has also been arranged to different poultry and meat processing plants. The information will also be shared on project formulation for seeking loans from banks, Government schemes, licencing programmes, standards and labelling of the food products.
