Dr. L. D. Singla, Professor-cum Head, Department of Veterinary Parasitology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana has been honoured with Dr. D. P. Banerjee Memorial Oration Award-2013 by Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology in recognition of his valuable contributions and achievements in the field of Veterinary Protozoology. The prestigious award was presented to him by Dr. M. R. Saseendranath, Director of Academics & Research, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Kerala at the inaugural function of 24th National Congress of Veterinary Parasitology and National Symposium.The subject of the symposium was ‘Towards food security through sustainable animal production and integrated parasite management’ held at College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of KVASU, Mannuthy Campus. Dr Singla also presented a lead paper during the symposium on ‘TRYPANOSOMOSIS PATHOGENESIS, IMPACT AND DIAGNOSTIC ISSUES: AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE which is an economically important and widely prevalent disease of domestic and wild animals in India. As disease has recently beenreported in humans hence research is required to investigate its zoonotic potential. Dr. Deepak Sumbria, a Ph.D. scholar presented his research work conducted on this deadly disease in horses as a poster under the title “Molecular and serological detection of latent trypanosomosis in equines.” Ms. Amrita Sharma, research fellow in Department of Veterinary Parasitology, presented orally a paper on anaplasmosis, an economically important infectious disease of dairy animals. She discussed how advanced molecular techniques are more useful in detection of infection as compared to classical parasitological techniques. A total of 208 delegates attended the symposium from all over the country.
