Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Assistant Scientist (Fisheries), College of Fisheries,Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana has been nominated for three month international training programme in the field of Nutraceuticals by National Agricultural Innovation Project (ICAR). The funds to the tune of Rs. 8,44,310/- has been sanctioned by ICAR.She will join her training programme on 15th January, 2014 at Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Department of Animal Production, Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center, Gent, Belgium. Under this training programme, she will learn techniques for developing nutraceuticals for fish by isolating bioactive molecules such as polyphenols, carotenoids, PUFA’s Poly unsaturated fatty acid etc. from different algal species and their utilization in formulated and live fish feeds.
According to Dr. Asha Dhawan, Dean, College of Fisheries, GADVASU, the College of Fisheries is extensively working on the feed and feeding strategies of various freshwater fish species such as carps, catfishes, murrels, ornamental fishes etc. Live food in the form of algae (phytoplankton) and zooplankton is being provided to the early life stage of all the fish species. Thus, the present training in this area will surely help in extraction of purified nutraceuticals (pure enriched algae) from the naturally available resources (fish ponds) & its utilization for better survival, health and growth of fish.
