GADVASU Scientist earns “Best Oral Poster Presentation Award”

Dr. Ajeet Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Harvest and Post Harvest Technology, College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana attended the National Conference on “Bioactive Compounds and Functional Foods in Health and Disease Management” (BFHDM-2013) held at National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), Kundli, Sonipat (Haryana).

The research paper entitled Nutritional significance of gelatin prepared from rohu (Labeo rohita) waste”, authored by Dr. Ajeet Singh, Mr. Vijay Kumar Reddy, Mr. Ravneet Singh and Dr. Asha Dhawan, presented by Dr. Ajeet Singh was adjusted the “Best Poster Award” among the 140 papers presented in this category by scientists from the various institutes of India.

According to the scientists’ value addition of carps is of great importance as these fishes generate around 50% waste in the form of head, visceral organs, fins, scale and skin which causes pollution and unhygienic conditions. Conversion of these wastes into commercially important by-products such as fish meal, bone meal, fish oil, gelatin etc. solve the problem of pollution and will also help in maintaining hygienic conditions along with revenue generation.

It is pertinent to mention that vet varsity is doing very extensive work on zero wastage of fish. Results revealed that it increased the profit by double.
