The First Annual Review Meet of DBT Network Project on Brucellosis was held on 29th and 30th October, 2013 at the School of Public Health & Zoonoses, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. The meet was presided over by Dr. V. K. Taneja Vice Chancellor, GADVASU and chaired by Dr. NK Ganguly, Director-General (Retd.) ICMR, and co-chaired by Dr. V.K. Batra, Director, Defence Food Research Laoratory, Mysore. Sixteen principal Investigators along with Co-PI’s from seven different states are participated in this meet. There were scientific deliberations relating to epidemiology, serosurveillance, rapid diagnostics, and generation of recombinant vaccines for the control of human and animal brucellosis in the country.
Dr. VK Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU encouraged collaborations between the veterinary and medical health sector to combat the zoonotic diseases. He further emphasized that such networks should also be started for the emerging zoonotic diseases in the country under one health approach. Dr. JPS Gill, Director, School of Public Health and Zoonoses and Principal Investigator of the GADVASU Unit of the All India Network Project on Brucellosis said that this project will help to boost the country’s capability in terms of the surveillance approach and will make a huge impact on the country’s productivity. He also informed that a National Repository for Brucella strains will be created under this project which will aid in the molecular epidemiological studies.
Dr. S. R. Rao, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India stressed upon the importance of quality control and the maintenance of proper database which will aid in the development of control measures. The experts praised the progress of the GADVASU unit and emphasized on the working out of risk factors for the transmission of animal brucellosis to human beings. They also fixed milestones for all the units and set targets to achieve them. The meet concluded on encouraging note, wherein the experts applauded the research progress made in the arena of Brucellosis in all the Network centres.
