S. Ranike Cabinet Minister inaugurates dairy seminar at vet varsity

Punjab Government is infusing new technologies in dairy farming in state with a objective of holistic development in dairy farming. This was revealed by S. Gulzar Singh Ranike, Cabinet Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana in a one day seminar. Dr. Ranjodhan Singh Sahota, Director of Extension Education revealed that Seminar was organized with collaboration of Punjab Dairy Development Board on ‘Innovations in Dairy Farming’ with special emphasis on new techniques adopted by Israel in this profession. S. Ranike reaffirmed the commitment of Govt. to develop dairy in Punjab in the context of diversification and better economic growth. Dr. V.K. Taneja, Vice-Chancellor was the guest of honour. He said that reproduction disorders, value addition of products and adoption of modern techniques are the major issues to be addressed. Dr. Taneja said that varsity is working in close tandem with the dairy department which makes the transfer of technology to the field easy. He said that we are addressing the problems of livestock sector which come in our knowledge from field staff. It is a two way process to identify the problem and to eradicate he added.

S. Inderjit Singh, Director Punjab Dairy Development Board in the key note address explained the background and purpose of the seminar. He told that a delegation of dairy farmers along with officials was sent to Israel to learn new techniques. Now the knowledge gathered by them needs to be spread throughout the state. Sharing the future plan he told that a new course entitled ‘Dairy Product Training’ is being introduced to enable the milk producers to add value by converting milk in  to indigenous milk products.   

A progressive dairy farmer Sukhharpreet Singh Rode who recently visited Israel with a delegation of Punjab’s officials and farmers shared his experience from that country. He said that record keeping, heat stress management, solar energy usage and bio gas plants are some important and healthy interventions of Israel which may be adopted in our region in the same manner A technical session of experts was also conducted on different issues of dairy farming. Dr. A.L.Saini, HOD livestock production and management department shared his views on the topic of Animal Housing & Heat Stress Management. Dr. R.S.Grewal delivered on the subject of Nutrition of High Yielding Cattle & Calf Rearing. Dr. N.S.Sekhon from Animal Husbandry Deptt, Punjab addressed on Health & Reproductive Management of Dairy Animals. About 250 farmers from different nook and corners of the state attended the seminar. A special question answer session was arranged for the field queries of the farmers. Dr. J.S. Bhatti HOD Veterinary Extension Education proposed vote of thanks to all for attending this function.
