Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, is focusing on newer livestock professions which are very easy to adopt. These are extremely helpful for women, unemployed youth, school dropouts and the persons who are already in traditional live stock professions. These views were expressed by Dr. V. K Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU in connection with two days Pashu Palan Mela which is going to start on 22 September 2011. He said that we are putting a lot of efforts to explore the new
Avenues in livestock sector. Now days, everybody is health conscious and want hygienic, wholesome food and value addition is the answer. Dr. V. K Taneja revealed that the recently developed value added products from milk namely Dodha and Mishti Dahi will be released on this occasion and available for the public. He further added that College of Dairy Science & Technology is dedicatedly working on new & better flavours of Ice cream, sweet, salted and flavoured Lassi and whey drinks which will also be available. Department of Livestock Products Technology has innovated different variants of low fat Mozzarella cheese and Low fat paneer. Meat Koftas, Patties, egg and meat Pickles, nuggets & kurkure prepared from chicken, & goat meat and other eatable varieties. Anybody can do it on professional level with a limited capital. University will always be at their service to provide training and marketing tips. He said that in local market there is a great demand of these products. People will like these mouth watering delicacies.
Dr. Taneja told that sale of ornamental fishes & aquarium manufacturing is also another good Profession. University is also promoting it. More and more people are showing their interest to keep ornamental fish as pet. There demand is increasing in offices, homes & different business establishments. These beautiful & coloured fishes provide happiness & relief to human being. The College of Fisheries is providing complete training in this field. Dr. Taneja said that price of agricultural land has been shooting up & stake of farmers is decreasing day by day so farmers are interested to diversify in Livestock professions. These professions can be started with lesser capital & land as compare to agriculture. Heavy Physical strength is not required in these professions, so any youth, woman & senior citizen can contribute in these avenues. Further, they can enhance their income through value addition, which is the demand of today’s world. The enterprising and wise Punjabi farmers will reap the harvest through packaging and value addition.
