Training course on Veterinary Theriogenology concludes at GADVASU

A three-week advanced training course on “Advances in Applications of Diagnostic Techniques in Veterinary Theriogenology” organized by the Centre of Advanced faculty Training (CAFT), Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal  Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, concluded. Dr V K Gandotra, Professor and Head-cum-Director CAFT informed that nineteen faculty members from different State Agricultural and Veterinary Universities and ICAR institutes from 12 states of India attended this training course. The participant were made aware of latest know-how in the neuroendocrine regulation of animal reproduction, hormonal intervention to optimize reproduction, embryo transfer technology, advances in semen processing and evaluation, role of heat shock protein and other sperm associated antigens in bull fertility. The participants were given hand on training in use of ultrasonogrphy to assess reproductive status, ultrasound guided ovum pickup, application of ELISA/RIA for estimation of reproductive hormones, fetotomy operations to relieve dystopia in farm animals and application of vaginal cytology for diagnostic evaluation in pets.

The department was recognized as the Centre of Advanced Studies in Veterinary Gynaecology and Reproduction by ICAR, New Delhi in the year 1994 and it was renamed as Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in 2009. Earlier the department has conducted 19 training courses on various topics related to Animal reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics.  Over 178 teachers/scientists from various State Veterinary Universities/ State Agricultural Universities/ICAR institutes have participated in these courses.

Dr. S N S Randhawa, Dean Postgraduate Studies-cum-Coordinator CAFT, while chairing the valedictory function emphasized that a holistic diagnostic approach is desired for the early diagnosis of physiological and pathological condition of the reproductive tract in dairy and pet animals. Dr Randhawa released the compendium of lectures delivered during the training and a Video DVD  ‘Practical aspects of Theriogenology’ prepared by Dr SPS Ghuman, Dr Jagir Singh,  and Dr M Honparkhe aimed at an improvement in the under-graduate and post graduate teaching.
