Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, College of Veterinary Sciences, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organized an animal welfare camp at village Gureh(Ludhiana) on 3-3-2009. GADVASU adopted Gureh Village in 2007 and since then varsity’s animal welfare centre is operational in the same village. A team of experts naming Dr RS Sahota, Dr Narinder Singh. Dr SK Kansal, Dr Jaswinder Singh and Dr Rajesh Kasrija from Department of Veterinary and AH Extension were there to treat the animals and guidance for the livestock farmers. Dr HK Verma, Head Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension was the chief guest on this occasion. The village panchayat members, Jatinder Singh, and progressive livestock farmer S Sukhraj Singh welcomed the guest during his speech Dr Verma told that university will always ready to help the needy livestock farmers and give a brief on reproductive problems of animals. Dr Verma also ensured the villagers for an expert facility for the Gureh centre for all working days. During the camp 60 cases of Buffaloes, Cows, Bullocks and Dogs, were presented. Majority of the cases were of medicine (25) with problems of mastitis, diarrhea, fever, tick infestation, worm infestation, general debility and bloat. Gynecology cases (24) were of anoestrus, repeat breeding, metritis, abortion and pregnancy checkup. Surgical cases (12) were of castration of young male calf. Majority of the animals were weak due to worm infestation, mineral deficiencies and lack of fodder & balance feed. The drug application against “ticks” was demonstrated to the farmers as tick infestation was quite prevalent in this season especially in crossbred cows. Such camps should be held regularly for the welfare of animals and the rural people to give boost for adopting dairying as viable alternative to customized agriculture.
