KVK, Barnala organizes five days vocational training programme on

 Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Handiaya (Barnala) organized five days vocational training programme on “Scientific Pig Farming. A total 64 candidates including rural youth, farmer and women belong to four different district namely Barnala, Bathinda ,Sangrur and Mansa of Punjab participated  in this training programme.

Dr. P.S. Tanwar, Associate  Director, KVK, Barnala inaugurate the training programme and  shared his experience with youth regarding importance of Scientific Pig farming as an entrepreneur for their livelihood on commercial scale . He said that that pig farming is more profitable in comparison to other enterprise of livestock. He also emphasized that to attain higher income it is essential to start the other enterprises along with agriculture to reduce cultivation cost in agriculture by adopting latest technologies. He also laid emphasis that farmers, farm women and youth may get skill based trainings from KVK, Barnala in field of livestock sector such as Dairy farming, poultryfarming, piggery, Goat farming, agriculture, horticulture and value addition of milk and agriculture produce to practice farming activities on scientific lines to make them a profitable entrepreneur.

Dr. Surender Singh, Assistant professor (Livestock Production) delivered detailed lectures on different aspects of pig farming such as Pig breeds and their characteristics along with housing, feeding ,breeding , managements. Nutrient requirements and formulation of ration for different age groups were discussed in detailed with farmers. The breeding strategies which can be adopted to fully exploit the genetic potential of animals and ways through which problem of inbreeding in the farm can be avoided were also discussed. The technical skills regarding vaccination and de-worming were shared with the farmers. Dr. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) shared his views on integrated pig farming cum fish farming.

Special lecture of Progressive Pig farmers were also arranged to share their experience with new comers regarding farming and marketing strategies to get maximum return. An exposure visit of trainees was also arranged at Dhaliwal Pig farm village to provide first hand practical experience to the trainees. The vote of thanks was proposed by course coordinator to trainee for showing great zeal and interest throughout training.
