KVK, Tarn Taran establishes Farmers Field School at Sarhali Kalan

 Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran established Farmers Field School on ‘Specialized Pig Farming in village Sarhali Kalan at the farm named as Sandhu Swine Breeders. Mr. Hardeep Singh, S/o Sardar Bakshish Singh, who initiated his pig farming with the help of KVK scientists in February 2017 with a batch of 30-35 pigs, now holds around 150 pigs including 15 males and 135 females. Sixteen farmers belonging to different villages of Distt. Tarn Taran has participated in the inaugural session of Farmers Field School and interacted with KVK scientists. Mr. Hardeep Singh became a role model to neighbourhood farmers for initiating and establishing pig farm at village Sarhali Kalan.  By seeing this event three new farmers who wants to initiate pig farming were also interacted eagerly with KVK scientist. Further KVK team along with Mr. Hardeep Singh and farmers visited his pig farm and practically explained about each and every aspect related to pig farming.

Dr. Balwinder Kumar Deputy Director (Training) emphasized upon the development of skill related to livestock farming to the rural population of the district Tarn Taran as it is a lucrative venture. Farmers Field School helps farmers, farm women, and rural youth in developing the entrepreneurship through agriculture and livestock diversification. Pig farming is gaining momentum in district and can be good means for earning profit from this venture. Further he informed on preparation of pig house, feed management, selection of different species of pig, fodder/feed management, marketing and value addition of pig products on scientific lines. insights on importance of integration of crop, livestock and fishery were emphasized for doubling the farmer’s income. Farmers were also apprised about various facilities developed and provided by GADVASU and KVK for the benefit of farming community.

Dr Bhanu Prakash. Ch provided information to the farmers on integrated Pig cum fish farming and stressed on waste management of pigs and explained about its effective utilization as feed and manure for fish farming.
