Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran celebrated World Environment Day on 05 June, under the theme “Connecting People to Nature” at its campus. 35 farm women from different villages participated in this event. S. Bhupinder Singh, Sarpanch, Village- Harike, District- Tarn Taran and the team members of Non-Government Organization (NGO) namely EduCARE India also participated and exchanged their ideas regarding environmental protection and safety. In an inaugural message, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director told the participants about the significance of this day. Dr. Kumar while highlighting an alarming situation of contemporary environment suggested to plant a tree at least once a year by each family member and also motivate others to plant trees for the protection of mother earth. Dr. Shashipal awared listeners about harmful impacts of polythene usage and shared numerous ways to curtail its usage for better environment. Mrs. Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon and Sh. Nirmal Singh encouraged the farm women to carry cloth bags during the purchase of food commodities such as vegetables, fruits and other grocery items instead of asking for plastic bags from the vendors or shopkeepers.
Dr. Anil Kumar and Mr. Navjot Singh Brar discussed the aftermaths of non-biodegradable materials on soil, water and crops. Dr. SS Hassan told that plastic materials often dumped into the water reservoirs become home to many aquatic animals can pose threat to aquatic flora and fauna. On this occasion, KVK Tarn Taran planted tree at its campus. Faculty members of KVK and EduCARE India distributed 60 plants such as Neem, Arjun, Bottlebrush, Guava and Tun to the farm women in order to embrace and purify their home ambience with the slogan “Go Green and Stay Healthy”.
