Twin programmes at Veterinary Varsity A push to the Pig and Goat farming

To give much needed impetus to diversification, Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized one week duration twin programmes on Pig and Goat, simultaneously for field veterinarians of Punjab as well as for the farmers of Punjab and other states from 27 February to 3 March, 2017. A highly specialized programme on goat and pig farming was especially formulated to apprised the field Veterinarians with Pig and Goat farmers. The field vets in turn will impart the training programmes to the interested farmers in their respective areas. Dr. Jaswinder Singh informed that a total of 25 vets from every nook of the Punjab state attended the training. Vets were provided with hands on training on Ultrasonography, semen collection and evaluation, castration, diseases symptoms besides providing the latest knowhow on feeding, breeding and management, common diseases, prevention measures and also answeres their queries. Dr. Rajesh Kasrija, Dr. Ravdeep Singh and Dr. Bilawal Singh coordinated both the training programmes.

The specialised training on the “Pig farming as measures of diversification” was arranged for the farmers. A total of 58 farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh attended this training. Farmers were provided training on breeds, breeding, feeding, vaccination, diseases prevention, handling as well as practical knowledge of casting, pulse recording, temp recording first aid and emergency management.

Dr H.K Verma, Director Extension Education, GADVASU informed that goat and swine farming are coming as a big way of diversification in the state and university is receiving lot of applications every day on these two farmings. So, these two twin demand based training programmes were organized at veterinary university. He added that veterinary university is always working on to improve the socio-economic status of the livestock owners by providing them with recent inputs.

Dr S. Rampal, DSW cum Estate Officer said that now university has good facilities for boarding and lodging of the farmers so that they have not to face hassles of to and fro from their villages daily.

Dr S.K Kansal, HoD of Veterinary Extension Education informed that Veterinary University also publishes books and magazines for livestock farmers in Punjabi and English and have also developed video CDs on different aspects to educate the farmers for ideal management.

It pertinent to mention that GADVASU is organizing Pashu Palan Mela on 24 and 25th March and innovative farmers will be honoured in the show.
