College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences, conducted skill development training program to promote Pangas catfish farming-cum-processing model for doubling farmers income, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Punjab. Training was organised at the Government Fish Seed Farm of DOF Punjab at Village Mohie in district Ludhiana, where the university had established a pangas catfish farming demonstration unit for capacity building of entrepreneurial stakeholders under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) Scheme, informed Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean COF.
Twelve Fisheries Officers and 36 farmers/entrepreneurial youth attended the training program focusing on rearing Pangas catfish during summer months from April- October/November and its processing for preparation of value-added products, which could be preserved for marketing at competitive price during winter months, she informed.
The coordinator of the training program, Dr. S. N. Datta, apprised the trainees of detailed management practices for optimal growth of fish during restricted crop cycle of 6-7 summer months to harvest bigger sized healthy fish under agro climatic conditions of the State. Dr. Ajeet Singh, demonstrated various processing techniques for preparing ready to cook and ready to eat value added products from pangas fish.
Applauding the collaborative efforts made by the university, Mr. Jasvir Singh, Director and Warden Fisheries, Punjab expressed his conviction that diversification is essentially required to achieve envisaged production targets and capacity building programs play an important role in successful adoption of new technologies for reaping actual economic benefits.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor of the university impressed that it is imperative that regional technological requirements are addressed by all line departments in a collective manner to reach out to maximum number of stakeholders, with regular capacity building of concerned officials and extension workers as well
