Three fisheries graduates of Bachelor of Fisheries Sc., namely Akanksha Gautam, Ankita Singh and Saumya Mehta, of College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), got adm
ission in an integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Program in Food Technology in the Centre of Excellence in Seafood Science and Innovation (ICE-SSI), Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Hatyai-Thailand. This is a prestigious Institute of international repute working under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Dr. Soottawat Benjakul, who is Director of the Centre and a world-renowned scientist.
Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean COF, informed that the fisheries graduates of the college got this golden breakthrough under the Fellowship “Reinventing University Program” of ICE-SSI-PSU, covering living allowance of 1200 Baht (?) per month, tuition fee and health insurance during the study period. This had been possible due to the recent internation
al training of fisheries students at ICE-SSI, PSU under ICAR’s IDP-NAHEP program of the university, where the students got an opportunity to showcase their professional capabilities under the guidance of COF Scientist Dr. Prabjeet Singh.
The seafood processing industry generate large volumes of waste, which can be utilized as a prospective economic resource through value addition or recycling and our students are going to work in one of the best institutes to address the said issue, said Dr. Ansal. They are expected to work in the field of “Value Addition of Seafood Processing Waste” to develop prospective economic products for human nutrition and industrial application, informed Dr. Prabjeet Singh.
Congratulating for this outstanding achievement, Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU highlighted that innovative technologies are required to convert waste into wealth to maximum economic returns from farm produce and upkeep environmental health as well. He further expressed that strong academic linkages with international institutes of repute will facilitate student and faculty exchange programs, for holistic development of livestock, fisheries and other food production sectors.
