In the sequence of events of Animal Parasite Awareness Week from 23 to 27 August 2021, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a free deworming, acaricidal usage sample testing and Parasite management camp for livestock and pet owners. The event was conducted by the Department of Veterinary Parasitology in collaboration with the Directorate of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education.
The event was inaugurated by the Director Students Welfare cum Estate Officer, Dr Satyavan Rampal and presided by Dr S.S. Randhawa, Director of Clinics and Dr L.D. Singla, Professor-cum-Head, Department of Veterinary Parasitology. The officials emphasized on the importance of parasitic infections in livestock and pet animals and created awareness regarding the testing of the sample of suspected animals to arrive at a definitive diagnosis that in turn will help in accurate and timely treatment of the animals. In the event free dewormers and acaricidal drugs were distributed and free sample (faecal, blood and skin scrapings) testing services were also offered for the sick animals.
In continuation the experts visited the Animal shelter of Bhagwan Mahavir Abhayshala and Jeev Kalyan Kendra run by People for Animals, Ludhiana at Khwajke, Rahon Road, Ludhiana. The team was led by Dr. L.D. Singla was assisted by Dr. Paramjit Kaur, Dr. Neetu Saini, P.G. Students and officials from the Department of Veterinary Parasitology. The team inspected animals of the center, provided on the spot remedial treatment to the sick animals, measures and guidelines that can be adopted to prevent the parasitic and other infections and explained to the caretakers of the animals also. Ticks and Fecal samples were collected from the infected animals so that the disease can be diagnosed and further treatment can be recommended. Dr Sandeep K Jain President, A.P. Jain, Vice President, Swatanter Jain, Sanjeev Kundra, Rakesh Jain, Rajesh Romi office bearers of People for Animals, staff and villagers were present on occasion. The committee of the center welcomed the team GADVASU and requested Dr. L.D. Singla to keep in touch with the organization for treatment of abandoned animals.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor appreciated all these efforts. He stressed that such an awareness programme will be of immense help for prevention and control of zoonotic parasitic infections from animals to humans and vice versa.
