A three days training programme on ‘Fish Processing and Value Addition’ was organized under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education at College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana to commemorate 75th year of India’s independence as Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav. The training programme was conducted under the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology- Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan (CIFT-SCSP) sponsored project. Dr. Vikas Phulia, the Nodal Officer/PI of the project apprised that this project aims to develop entrepreneurship skills amongst scheduled castes communities of Punjab through fish processing and value addition. 17 participants belonging to different districts of Punjab attended the training. During the 3-day training, the major focus was to provide hands on training in fish processing skills such as fish handling, processing and value addition, packaging and preservation along with marketing, so that the potential entrepreneurs can establish small scale processing units. The practical demonstrations were given on the development of value added products such as fish fillets, fish cutlets, fish fingers, fish sausages and pickle from freshwater fish. All the technical sessions were effectively coordinated by Dr. Ajeet Singh and Dr. Vijay Reddy.
Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, College of Fisheries highlighted the untapped potential in fish processing sector for entrepreneurship development. She informed that College of Fisheries has always remained instrumental in organizing such training programmes for capacity building of various stakeholders so that the potential entrepreneurs can successfully adopt the ventures. Fish processing is a very remunerative activity and can play an important role in doubling the farmers' income, if practiced in a scientific manner, she added.
Dr. Prakash S. Brar, Director Extension Education, applauded the efforts of scientists in conducting the training programme in a meticulous manner. He advised the farmers to adopt zero waste technology of fish processing standardized by College of Fisheries, GADVASU for enhanced profitability along with the judicious use of fish processing waste. He also informed that training programmes on the similar line will also be organized at KVK Mohali and KVK Tarn Taran under the CIFT-SCSP.
