World Veterinary Week is being celebrated from 19 to 24 April 2021 at the College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.
Centre for One Health, GADVASU in collaboration with Directorate Livestock Farms under the aegis of National Agricultural Higher Education Project organized a Brucellosis Testing Camp today. Blood samples were collected from more than 60 personnel including veterinary doctors, dairy farm workers and laboratory workers. Dr. Jasbir Singh Bedi Director, Centre for One Health told that brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease which can be transmitted from farm animals to humans. He informed that this is an occupational risk for the veterinarians and livestock farmers and mentioned that awareness about the control of brucellosis is need of the hour.
Dr. Rajnish Sharma educated the dairy workers about the transmission of brucellosis and answered the queries regarding brucellosis. In addition to the brucellosis testing camp, Centre for One Health also involved in other activities during the World Veterinary Week. Centre for One Health has organized a national webinar on “Veterinarians response to COVID-19 crisis”. Dr. Bedi gave a talk on “Covid 19 impact on animal husbandry, Dr. Sharma on “Covid-19 in animals” and Dr. Pankaj Dhaka on “One health framework in context to COVID-19’. More than 120 participants attended the webinar. During this week, Dr Bedi, Dr. BBS Dhaliwal and Dr. Sharma also delivered radio talks on issues related to animal health due to COVID-19 on different stations of All India Radio.
Dr. S.P.S Ghuman, Dean, College of Veterinary Science mentioned that veterinarians are playing a pivotal role in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He told that veterinarians from several government institutes and veterinary schools of India including GADVASU have been involved in the testing of COVID-19. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor GADVASU congratulated the organizers for this endeavour and hoped that such activities will result in tacking the ongoing zoonotic diseases including COVID-19 as well as will create awareness about zoonotic diseases among stakeholders from different sectors.
