The plog run was conducted in nearly 50 cities/villages across the Punjab and a total distance of over 400 kilometres was covered under the initiative. The unique event was conceived as a part of state government initiative to combat the growing threat from plastic pollution by including the most powerful stakeholders such as local citizens. Complementing the NSS volunteers Dr. Satyavan Rampal, Director Students Welfare cum Estate Officer said that the Plog Run integrates three earlier programs introduced by the state government — Fit India, Clean India and Plastic-free India. "It is in the power of our NSS volunteers and their dedication towards the community work that real transformation can come under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”, said Dr Rampal.
Explaining the concept of the “Fit Punjab Plog Run", Nidhi Sharma, NSS Programme Coordinator, GADVASU said under the Plog Run concept all the volunteers participating in running activity are supposed to pick up plastic garbage spread across the route while running from strating point to finishing end. “Such an activity not only helps the individuals in staying fit but also help us in maintaining good health of the environment", said Mrs Sharma. She said that such an event helped the NSS volunteers to introduce plogging as a community activity among regular runners too.
The NSS Programme Officers of GADVASU at Ludhiana Amritsar and Rampuraphull organised the event that resulted in tangible impact with the running route virtually turning plastic free besides educating the locals about healthier waste management practices.
Among the NSS Officers that coordinated and managed the event are Dr. C S Mukhopadhyay from College of Animal Biotechnology; Dr. Sivakumar from College of Dairy Technology, Ludhiana; Dr. Manraj Singh from Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Amritsar and Dr. Anavil from College of Veterinary Science, Rampuraphul, Bathinda. The Run also marked the birth anniversary of Gandhi Jayanti and contributed towards Swachh Bharath Abhiyan, and was held at various places in Punjab.
