Farmers learn ways to manage crop residues at Vet Varsity

Thirty farmers belonging to village Dadehar Sahib from Tarn Taran district learned scientific ways to manage crop residue at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana campus. Dr H K Verma, Director Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana and Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran interacted with the farmers. Dr Verma said that crop residue can be managed by incorporation in the field (In situ) by various machineries and wheat crop after harvesting of the paddy can be sown with Happy seeder in standing stubbles without burning it. Farmers can save money, time and protect environment by scientifically managing the crop residues. Alternatively, paddy or basmati straw can be collected and after treating it with urea can be fed to the livestock as fodder.

Dr. Balwinder Kumar said that farmers are coming forward to shun the practice of burning of paddy straw and information regarding scientific management of straw is being transferred to the farmers of the district well in time so that they can learn critical points to be taken care for successful raising of wheat and other crops with crop residue management machinery. Farmers also visited College of Engineering, PAU, Ludhiana for gaining practical knowledge regarding crop residue management machinery such as super SMS, Happy Seeder, Reversible MB plough, Rotary Slasher, mulcher etc. Tarn Taran farmers were on exposure visit of the university for vocational training programme under the project Promotion of Agricultural Mechanization for In-situ Management of Crop Residue in Punjab. Visiting farmers of village Dadehar Sahib assured university and KVK that they will adopt all possible means to avoid burning of crop residue in their fields.
