June 29

Almost all of total 80 fishery graduates passed out from the College of Fisheries of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana so far are on highly placed jobs in India or abroad. Dr. Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Dean, of the College informed that recently, 10 of our pass outs (B.F.Sc./M.F.Sc.) joined as Fisheries Officer (FO) in the State Fisheries Department, Punjab and 13 graduates were recruited as Assistant Technology Managers (ATM) by the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA). Earlier, 12 of our postgraduates were appointed as Assistant Professors/Assistant Scientists/Research Fellow/Teaching Assistant in different Universities/KVKs; Fishery Officers in Rajasthan, Bihar and Punjab; ATM in Bihar , National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and sales executives in private aquaculture pharmaceutical/feed industry. About 20 fisheries graduates from GADVASU are settled abroad (Canada/USA/Australia) after higher studies or are pursuing higher studies in foreign universities/institutes, while 24 are pursuing higher studies (M.F.Sc./Ph.D) in reputed universities of India having promising potential for placement in any of the 29 fisheries colleges, 09 National Fisheries Institutes/Directorate/Bureau (ICAR/NFDB/MPEDA) and more than 70 State Agricultural or Veterinary Universities/Central Universities. After remarkable landmarks in ‘Green’ and ‘White’ revolutions, Punjab has recorded commendable growth in fish farming in the last three decades and is also moving very fast towards ‘Blue Revolution’. Perceiving a demand for quality human resource to cater R&D needs for sustainable development of fisheries sector and employment opportunities thereof Vet Varsity established a College of Fisheries in 2008.

Dr. A.S. Nanda, Vice Chancellor GADVASU said that aquaculture industry is going to enter into a new phase in Punjab with shrimp farming development in salt affected areas of  south west districts of the State and fishery graduates will be required as grass root level workers, while demand for  post graduates/doctorate academicians/scientists/planners will also increase for quality human resource development, technology generation and strategic planning for sustainable development of the sector.

Fishery is a vibrant sector with an incredible contribution towards livelihood generation and food security at regional, national and global levels. After China, India is the second largest aquaculture producer in the world, with total fish production of over 11.67 million tones, contributing 6.3% to global production and providing livelihood/employment to about 14.5 million people. Recognizing the socio-economic impacts of fisheries and its contribution in national economy, ‘Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries’ under Ministry Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, was recently bifurcated in 2019 to create separate ‘Department to Fisheries’ as an impetus measure to drive the nation towards a sustainable ‘Blue Revolution’ plateau, under separate ministry with a proposed ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIFD) of  Rs. 7522.48 crores.

With a diverse scope of employment as well as self-employment at State, national and global levels, fisheries in general and aquaculture in particular is one of the vibrant academic options for candidates aspiring for a career with multiple professional choices, said Dr.  Nanda. Dr. S. Prabhakar, the Registrar, GADVASU informed that admission to B.F.Sc. course in GADVASU is open and eligible candidates should apply for securing admissions in a timely manner.
