DAIRY FARMERS TRAINED IN ANIMAL NUTRITION TECHNOLOGIES AT VET VARSITY

Department of Animal Nutrition, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a five day Hands on training on ‘Nutritional technologies for dairy farmers’ under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, GADVASU. Six dairy farmers from different districts of Punjab participated in this training. In the concluding function of the training, Dr. H.K. Verma, Director of Extension Education said that feed accounts for 70% of total cost of dairy farming. By using these technologies farmers can economize feeding of their animals to make it a profitable venture. Diversification in agriculture is a need of the hour and answer lies in livestock farming.
Course Director-cum-Head, Dept. of Animal Nutrition Dr. Manju Wadhwa said that nutrition is a backbone of every production system. Adoption of nutritional technologies would provide unemployed youth a way to be a successful entrepreneur. Animal Nutrition Experts imparted knowledge on nutrition technologies along with practical demonstrations. The objective of the training was to ensure balanced feeding of different categories of animals all around the year using locally available feed resources. Role of mineral mixture, Urea Molasses Mineral Block, and Bypass nutrients was highlighted. Conservation of fodders (Silage and hay) was also demonstrated, so as to make the fodder available all around the year. Department is helping out the farmers by  providing various facilities like Area specific mineral mixtures, Mineral mixture for high yielding dairy animals, Mineral mixture for pigs, Uromin lick, Fortified bypass fat at nominal price. Dr. Wadhwa revealed that farmers can contact department for any query regarding balanced feed formulations or for getting their feed tested. Course Co-ordinators Dr. APS Sethi and Dr. J.S. Hundal told that all the farmers showed great interest in learning nutritional technologies for dairy farming. Participants were also made aware about other facilities provided by the University.
