An International Teaching Workshop by College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, (GADVASU) Ludhiana, in Collaboration with University of Calgary, Canada started today for three days. This teaching workshop is outcome of the visionary thought of Dr. AS Nanda, Vice-Chancellor GADVASU to upgrade the teaching standards of the university to the international level. This is the first time that a teaching workshop is being conducted in GADVASU to update the faculty about latest teaching tools and methods. Three scientists from University of Calgary, Canada; Dr. Baljit Singh, Dean Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Amy Warren, Associate Dean and Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Science, Dr. Kent Hecker, Associate Professor, Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Science were the resource persons for this workshop. In inaugural session, Dr. PS Brar,
Dean, College of Veterinary Science, welcomed the overseas delegates, participants and faculty members of the university. Dr. Brar emphasized that the purpose of this workshop is to update faculty about latest teaching methods and tools used worldwide. He further stressed on the importance of modern teaching modules and their role in effective communication between a teacher and student. Dr. JPS Gill, Director Research,
gave a glimpse of GADVASU collaborations with the foreign institutes and its standing in the institutional ranking.
Dr. Amy Warren, Chief-Guest of the occasion highlighted the role of modern teaching practices and expressed her keen interest to interact with participants and staff members of the university. She also presented the details about University of Calgary, Canada and discussed the importance of visual inspection in veterinary and animal sciences. Dr. Baljit Singh, Guest of Honour and alumnus of GADVASU showcased the inherent strengths of the traditional Gurukul system. He also mentioned the ongoing collaborations between University of Calgary and GADVASU and emphasized on significance of teaching ability and development of teaching skills in young professional. Dr. Kent Hecker, a well-known Veterinary Medical Educationist interacted on learning, instructional designs and assessment in basic and applied educational research. Dr. MK Chatli, GADVASU presented an academic overview of the university. The proceedings of the inaugural session were conducted by Dr. RS Sethi, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Biotechnology. In this workshop, 25 participants from this institute will interact with the experts in three groups and hone their professional teaching skills. In total more than 150 teachers and students attended the workshop. Dr. Opinder Singh, HoD Veterinary Anatomy extended vote of thanks to the audience.
