Pig farming attracting youths: GADVASU experts

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana strive its best to promote livestock farming as a sustainable entrepreneurship through various means. In the continuation of this effort, university organized training programmes on Pig Farming as a viable entrepreneurship. A total of 40 candidates attended the same. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education, told that Pig farming, now a day’s is gaining ground among masses after shattering apart the age old taboo of being occupation of downtrodden. In present scenario, pig farming means piggy banking as more profitability. Government is also making all possible efforts to popularize it further among youth and small farmers. He further told that livestock sector has bunches of option to adopt like dairy farming, poultry farming, goat farming, fish farming and pig farming value addition of livestock produce, feed manufacturing etc. One can adopt as per likeliness and resources available.
Dr. S.K. Kansal, Head, Department of  Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, told that Interest of youth and other  farmers in pig farming can be well judged from the glut of  training applications we are receiving at extension wing of University. Dr Jaswinder Singh, Coordinator of this training revealed that  pig farming training at GADVASU provided wholesome package to the trainees covering breeds, feeding, management of piglets, boar, sow, vaccination, disease prevention, economics, value addition, integration with other farming along with hands on training for handling and measuring body parameters . Dr Singh further informed that an association of progressive Pig farmers of Punjab is running under the aegis of GADVASU to provide time to time technical knowledge. University is organizing one technical seminar regularly on the last Thursday of every month.
