August 24

An International Workshop on writing and critical appraisal of a journal article” was inaugurated by Dr JPS Gill, Director of Research, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. He congratulated the organizers for this endeavour and hoped that it will help boost student research output at the University. Being skilled in critical appraisal is vital to enable students to keep up to date with the research literature and best practice. The workshop is being held at the School of Public Health and Zoonoses in collaboration with the University of Sydney, Australia. Dr Gill informed that Dr Navneet Dhand, Associate Professor in Veterinary Epidemiology from The University of Sydney, Australia will present a structured framework to assist in critically appraising a scientific paper.

Dr. Navneet Dhand has been on the editorial board of many international journals published in the field of veterinary sciences. He informed that participants will be apprised of the formal structure of a scientific paper and importance of each section of a scientific paper. In brief, the participants will be equipped with the essential skills required to write a good scientific paper. The participants will be informed about logical flow and brevity, two most critical principles of scientific writing. The workshop has received an overwhelming response and is being attended by more than 150 postgraduate students and researchers from various departments of GADVASU.

Dr RS Aulakh, the organising secretary of this workshop, informed that the workshop is being organised under the ongoing collaboration with The University of Sydney, Australia and GADVASU. He informed that GADVASU had signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with The University of Sydney in 2015 for collaborative research and for facilitating exchange of faculty and students. This workshop is the fifth in a series of workshops conducted after this agreement and will further strengthen this relationship and enable development of stronger ties between the two premier institutions.

Dr. AS Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU congratulated the School of Public Health & Zoonoses for this endeavour and hoped that the workshop participants will apply the skills learnt in the workshop in their research work.
