Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) & Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), visited Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. Dr. Mohapatra visited different departments, Veterinary Hospital for witnessing treatment and diagnostic facilities provided to large and small animals ; Dairy Farm for elite animals (Murrah, Nili Ravi, Sahiwal and Beetal goat) and Fisheries College. Dr. Mohapatra appreciated the health and diagnostic facilities of the hospital provided to the livestock owners of the Punjab and adjoining states. He emphasized the need for the development, promotion & conservation of indigenous breeds of dairy animals, in the state as well as at national level.
Department of Animal Nutrition is supplying Area Specific Mineral Mixture, Bypass fat & Uromin licks etc. for the dairy animals. Dr. Mohapatra, appreciated the research & services inputs supplied by the department and stressed upon to work out the impact analysis of promising technologies and inputs. Dr. Mohapatra also patted the use of fruits & vegetables as methane mitigators.
He also visited Fisheries College and admired its contribution towards shrimp farming success story in salt affected areas of Punjab, which has uplifted the socio-economic status of debt ridden farmers owing these underproductive or zero earning lands. He emphasized on intensifying research work towards aquaculture diversification for higher productivity and economic returns. Further, he also impressed that being the fast growing sector with great potential towards food and nutritional security, the fisheries sector needs to be strengthened by strengthening teaching, research and extension services in State Agricultural Universities for executing an effective fisheries research and development programme in the States.
An interactive session was held with the Vice Chancellor and officers of the university. Dr AS Nanda Vice Chancellor, GADVASU explained various academic programmes, PPP Model, National & International collaborations and other research & extension initiatives undertaken by the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Dr. Mohapatra applauded the efforts of GADVASU for being placed as No. 1, State Veterinary University at national level by ICAR, New Delhi.
