GADVASU Concludes Workshop on Veterinary Laparoscopy

A two day workshop on “Clinical applications of laparoscopy and endoscopy in small animals practice” was organized by the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, GADVASU in collaboration with Karl Storz Company. Dr. V.M. Chariar, Director, Academy for Veterinary Endoscopy, Karl Storz, Mumbai imparted training to the faculty members of the Departments of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology and Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics. During this workshop diagnostic and surgical aspects of laparoscopy and gastroscopy were demonstrated and hands on training were practiced in clinical cases. A case of Golden Retriever bitch suffering from remnant ovaries and stump pyometra was also successfully operated by laparoscopic surgery during this workshop.

Dr. Narinder Singh Saini, Professor-cum-Head, department of Veterinary surgery and Radiology said that GADVASU has procured laparoscopic surgery instruments and established laparoscopic surgery unit for dogs and cats which is operational since two years. Laparoscopy is a minimal invasive technique and can be used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Laparoscopy has many implications like ovarectomy (ovaries removal), spay (ovaries and uterus removal) surgery, gall bladder removal, foreign bodies removal lodged in esophagus and stomach. In addition laparoscopy is helpful to diagnose tumours, cysts, abscess of various abdominal organs like liver, kidney, splenic, intestine, urinary bladder etc. It is also useful for taking laproscopic guided cytological and histopathological samples for diagnosis. In past also Department of Surgery and Radiology is involved in arranging such workshops for training the faculty from India and abroad in field like Neurology, Orthopaedics, emergency and critical care and echocardiography in veterinary practice etc.

Dr. Simrat Sagar Singh, Dean College of Veterinary Science, GADVASU, said that

laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery is a new technique in veterinary practice. Hands on training are must to generate expertise and to improve surgical skills of Veterinary surgeons.

During the Laparoscopic workshop Dr. V.K. Taneja, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU and Dr. S.S. Johl, Former VC of Punjabi Univ. and PAU and Former Chairman, State Planning Commission visited the clinical lab, small animal surgical unit and veterinary Radiology unit and saw the live Laparoscopic surgery being done on anesthetised female dog for ovary removal and appreciated the work being done at this institute.
