The monthly meeting of Progressive Pig Farmers Association ( PPFA) was held at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Pig farmers team different parts of Punjab participated in this meeting. The problems of pig farmers were discussed in detail by the experts. On the demand and request of Pig farmers, a special lecture on hot topic “H1N1 flu” was delivered by Dr. Rajnish Sharma, Assistant Professor, Public Health Department, informed the farmers that H1N1 flu is a respiratory disease, which can spread from diseased person to healthy person. He stressed that Pork or pig meat should be consumed after proper cooking. Protection from this disease can be achieved by adopting some healthy habits such as Cleaning hands properly, Use of handkerchief for sneezing, and timely consultancy from family physician. Further, he stressed that clean & hygienic measures should be adopted at the pig farms and restrict/stop the entry of visitors at their farms. Dr. Suresh K. Devatkal, Senior Scientist, CIPHET, Ludhiana, delivered lecture on “Value addition of pork”. He discussed in detail about various pork products and humane slaughtering of Pig Sr. Lal Singh, from Allahabad bank delivered lecture about loan and facilities provided by bank Dr. H K Verma, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, informed that at the monthly meet for pig farmers is organized at GADVASU by PPFA on every 4th Thursday of month. PPFA has around 250 members. He also informed that thinking of farmers are changing about pig farming and now many new pig farms are coming up with large numbers of pigs.
