Training on ornamental fish culture and breeding concludes at GADVASU

Ornamental fish farming is an activity, which not only provide aesthetic pleasure to the fish keeper, but also give easy way to financial gains. In India, there is a huge demand for exotic ornamental fishes. The domestic ornamental fish market is worth around Rs. 500 million and the demand is increasing at 20 % annually. India contributes only about 0.008% to the global trade, thus showing great potential. The ornamental fish keeping activity was started as hobby but now a days it has come up as a very rewarding industry as now a days the aquaria are being kept in houses, offices, malls, garden pools etc. These views were expressed by Dr. Kamaldeep kaur Dean College of Fisheries GADVASU on completion of training course on ornamental fishes.

 is also very much suitable for the culture and breeding of ornamental fish species, so this venture can be taken up very easily and the traders can produce the seed of different species locally and can earn handsome money. Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Assistant Scientist (Fisheries) and Technical Co-ordinator of the programme demonstrated technology for the rearing and breeding of different ornamental fish species. She also gave tips to identify the different species of ornamental fishes (gold fish, koi carp, gourami, molly, platy), diseases diagnoses and treatment methods, water quality management, nutrition management etc. Participants were given certificates on the successful completion of the training programme. In view of these facts, GADSVASU, Ludhiana is successfully culturing and breeding ornamental fish species (gold fish, koi carp, guppy, molly etc.). To disseminate the technology of culture and breeding among the farmers and young entrepreneurs, Department of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, GADVASU, Ludhiana conducted two day training programme on the “Culture and seed production of Ornamental fishes”. About 20 participants from different districts of Punjab ( Ludhiana, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Mohali) attended the training. Dr. K.S. Sandhu, Director Extension Education, GADVASU, was the chief guest. He suggested the participants to adopt this venture on scientific lines. He further ensured that the training on ornamental fish culture and breeding will be a regular feature in the university in the coming years. According to Dr. Kamaldeep Kaur, Dean, College of Fisheries, ornamental fish culture and breeding holds great potential in Punjab and can be a good source of income for the unemployed youth, women especially as backyard business. Dr. Asha Dhawan, Head, Department of Aquaculture and Co-ordinator of the training programme informed the trainees about this upcoming and lucrative enterprise. She informed that the export from our country is mainly confined to freshwater varieties from the natural resources predominantly from the North-Eastern states. Ornamental fish breeding and culture is confined in and around the metro cities in India viz. Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, hence there is great scope of this entrepreneurship in Punjab.
