Dr C K Singh invited to present lecture on Rabies at Palampur University

July 7

Dr Charan Kamal Singh, a noted expert of rabies, and Professor in Department of Veterinary Pathology at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana was recently invited by the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists (IAVP), Himachal Pradesh Chapter to present a talk on “An update on Rabies Diagnosis” in the auditorium of the GC Negi College of Veterinary Science, CSK HP University, Palampur.

Dr Singh threw light on the latest approaches for rabies diagnosis around the world. It has been widely perceived that diagnosis of rabies is dependent on testing from the brain tissue of the suspected animal, however, Dr Singh informed that the hair follicles of the rabies suspected living animal could be used for detection of rabies rather than the conventional approach of diagnosis from brain tissue which was quite intriguing for the participants of the lecture. While dwelling into the noval procedures for diagnosis of rabies, Dr Singh was of the view that with strengthening of the rabies ante-mortem detection of rabies by molecular approaches, we are now better equipped for effective control of rabies in the country. The lecture was followed by healthy discussion wherein Dr Singh cleared the doubts about rabies infection and spread in animals. In addition to the scientists and post-graduate students of the Palampur University, various medicos and representatives of the NGOs attended the specially organized lecture.

While interacting with the representative of NGOs,  Dr Singh mentioned that as a member of the National Core Committee of Rabies Control Program under the aegis of Animal Welfare Board of India sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests, he has developed a project for chalking out definitive strategy for control of Rabies in India, the strategic implementation of which shall pave the way for phasing out rabies from the country.

Dr V K Gupta, Professor-cum-Head, Department of Veterinary Pathology, CSK HP University, Palampur and Chairman, State Chapter, IAVP thanked Dr Charan Kamal Singh for the highly informative talk for the benefit of the scientists of Himachal Pradesh University.
